HALLOWEEN HORROR IN SOUTH KOREA

Over 151 people were killed in the Seoul district of Itaewon. On the eve of Halloween, more than a lakh people gathered to celebrate the annual Halloween festival on the eve of October 31. The incident occurred in Seoul’s District Itaewon’s popular nightclub district.People are deeply shocked and in grief at the loss of so many young lives due to the stampede in Seoul.

 

While witnesses claim that the party was so tightly packed that it was difficult to move around before those at the top of the slope fell, sending people below them topping over others,Though it was unclear what prompted the crowd to pour into the downhill alley in the Itaewon neighbourhood on Saturday night.

 

Moreover, the witnesses said people fell on each other “like Dominoes,” and some victims were bleeding from their noses and mouths while being given CPR. The survivors said that they were trapped for around an hour and a half before being rescued, as some people shouted for help and others were short of breath.

 

Kim Mi Sung, an official at a non-profit organisation that promotes tourism in Itaewon, said that she performed CPR on 10 people who were unconscious, of whom nine were declared dead on the spot. Not only did 151 people die, but more than a hundred others were seriously injured.

 

This was the deadliest disaster in South Korea after the 2014 incident, where 299 people, mostly high school students, died in a ferry sinking. The sinking of the MV Sewol, also called the Sewol Ferry Disaster, occurred on the morning of Wednesday, April 16, 2014. The death toll was around 304, and only 171 survived the incident.

 

The actual day is celebrated mostly by young adults, and academies hand out candy. Koreans like to crave pumpkins. Itaewon and clubs in Seoul have dress-up events and parties all night. People dressed in their cutest or scariest gear are heading towards spooky fun. Everland, the largest theme park in South Korea, is decked out for the Halloween season.

 

Halloween has resulted in a presumption in South Korea. From the people enjoying the Halloween activities to the people filing missing persons’ applications, The heart-drowning incident has brought us to the doorstep of doom. It is saddening how the police were not pro-active and aware of the situation.

 

Around 90 ambulances were dispatched for the same reason. Therefore, South Korea has declared a period of national mourning following a deadly Halloween crowd crush in Seoul’s popular Itaewon neighborhood. Taking everything into consideration, the policemen and rescue workers were working hard, but there was a lack of preparation.
