Many people have asked me why I oppose the film Pathan. I have already given my reason in my fb posts, but may elaborate.
At the outset I may say that I am not against Shah Rukh Khan, and I do not share the views of those who oppose the film because it shows Deepika Padukone in a saffron bikini.
My reason is totally different. I believe that a film, like other forms of art, must have social relevance, particularly in a poor country like India having huge problems of poverty, hunger ( we have slipped from position number 101 to 107 out of 121 countries surveyed by Global Hunger Index, and are behind neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh ), massive unemployment, skyrocketing prices, almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses, etc.
When I was young I used to see a lot of films ( I have not seen any for the last 40 years or so ). My favourite were Raj Kapoor films, many of which had social relevance e.g. Awaara, Shri 420, Boot Polish, Jagte Raho, etc. Similarly, the films of Charlie Chaplin , Sergei Eisenstein, Akira Kurosawa etc had social relevance.
From the teaser of Pathan it is obvious it has no social relevance. Such films, to my mind, are only a form of escapism, taking one into a world of make believe and fantasy, and so are really like an opium or a drug, to give a short relief from the harsh realities of life. They divert attention from the real problems facing the Indian people, and thus serve the rulers, like the other opiums such as our TV shows, petty politics, etc.
This why I opposed Pathan, and not from a communal angle.
Respected sir there are two types of cinema, one is realistic and one is commerical and both of them depend on eachother. Producer make money from commercial cinema and invest in realistic films too which generally don’t make much business in India.
