A magnificient Ram temple is going to be consecrated on 22nd January by the Indian Prime Minister Modi, and the whole of India is astir and abuzz about it.
In this context it may be apt and interesting to mention Rahim’s devotion to Lord Ram.
Abdul Rahim Khan-e-Khaanan ( 1556-1627 ), popularly known as Rahim, was not only a brave general in the army of the Moghul Emperor Akbar, but was also a great Hindi poet, whose ‘dohas’ ( couplets ) are well known in the Hindi speaking belt of India, and are part of the school curriculue.
Rahim, though a Muslim, was a devotee of the Hindu god Lord Ram ( just as Raskhaan, another Muslim poet, was a devotee of the Hindu god Lord Krishna ).
This dispels the notion that Hindus and Muslims hated each other, and could not live together, which was the basis of the bogus two nation theory on which India was partitioned in 1947.
Many of Rahim’s dohas are in praise of Lord Ram, some of which are given below :
- गहि सरनागति राम की, भवसागर की नाव
‘रहिमन’ जगत-उधार को, और न कछू उपाय.
“To cross the ocean of existence, one must seek refuge in Lord Ram. Rahim says there is no other way to uplift the world.” - राम नाम जान्यो नहीं, जान्यो सदा उपाधि
कहि रहीम तिहिं आपुनो, जनम गंवायो वादि
“Those who know only wealth and titles, not the name of Ram, have wasted their lives in futile arguments, says Rahim.” - राम नाम जान्यो नहीं, भई पूजा में हानि
कहि ‘रहीम’ क्यों मानिहैं, जम के किंकर कानि
“Failing to recognize the glory of Ram’s name, I engaged in rituals in vain. At the end, even the messengers of death won’t listen to me.” - रहिमन धोखे भाव से मुख से निकसे राम
पावत पूरन परम गति कामादिक कौ धाम
“Even if accidentally, uttering Ram’s name with emotion brings salvation, regardless of being engulfed in desires and sins.” - मुनि नारी पासान ही कपि पसु गुह मातंग
तीनों तारे रामजू तीनों मेरे अंग.
“Lord Ram uplifted Ahilya, the monkey army, and Nishadraj Guha. These represent the hardness, animalistic nature, and lowliness within me, and only Ram can redeem me.” - दुख नर सुनि हॉसी करै धरत रहीम न धीर
कही सुनै सुनि सुनि करै ऐसे वे रघुबीर.
“People will laugh at your sorrows, not offering comfort. Only Lord Ram will hear and alleviate your suffering.” -
राम नाम जान्यो नहीं, भई पूजा में हानि
कहि ‘रहीम’ क्यों मानिहैं, जम के किंकर कानिFor those who do not know the name of Lord Ram, ritualistic prayers will only bring harm. Yamraj ( the god of death ) will pay no heed to their pleas ( in deciding whether to take them to heaven or hell ) -
चित्रकूट में रमि रहे, ‘रहिमन’ अवध-नरेस
जा पर बिपदा परत है , सो आवत यहि देसHaving left his huge kingdom of Avadh, Lord Ram is living in ChitrakootWhoever is in distress comes to this place( this doha is in praise of Chitrakoot, a small town in UP, where Lord Ram is said to have spent many years of his exile, with his wife Sita, and his younger brother Laxman )
