Jahangir Tareen, the mahalota

Most politicians everywhere in the world are unprincipled, unscrupulous, devious and unethical opportunists. However, Jahangir Tareen ( born 1950 ), who has recently formed the Istehkam-e-Pakistan party, really takes the cake, being a Machiavellian who would put Machiavelli to shame.

Jahangir Tareen built a huge business empire, owning some of the largest sugar mills in Pakistan, several other business enterprizes, thousands of acres of land, and assets worth over Rs 400 billion, and for this purpose using all kinds of corrupt and crooked means.

To protect and benefit his business interests, he entered politics.

In 2002 he was elected to Pakistan’s National Assembly on the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) ticket, and in 2004 he became Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Industries, on which position he remained till 2007, during which period his sugar mills flourished, and his wealth increased exponentially.

In 2008 he was elected an MP on a PML(F) ticket.

In 2011 he joined Imran Khan’s PTI party, saying his vision was the same as that of PTI ( i.e. honesty in politics ), and was appointed its Secretary General in 2013, and was elected an MP in 2015 on a PTI ticket.

On 15.12.2017 the Pakistan Supreme Court disqualified him from serving as an MP due to his large scale dishonesty in financial matters such as insider trading. Following this decision he had to resign as Secretary General of PTI, but said that he will remain part of PTI’s struggle, and hoped Imran Khan will be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan.

However, after the events of 9th May this year and the crackdown on PTI leaders and workers, he shamelessly changed his tune, and did a complete somersault. He has now formed his own party, the Istehkam-e-Pakistan, which strongly criticises the PTI for the events of 9th May

His speech in the press conference in which he announced formation of his new party, and pledging to work for the people’s welfare, sounded like a prostitute praising the virtues of chastity.

Jahangir Tareen reminds me of the French politician Talleyrand ( 1754-1838 ), the weathercock who kept changing sides, watching which way the political wind was blowing, first supporting the French Monarchy, then the French Revolution of 1789 which abolished the monarchy, then the Directory formed in 1795, then Napoleon who overthrew the Directory, thereafter following defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 supporting restoration of the monarchy under Louis 18th, and later the bankers’s monarchy of Louis Phillipe in 1830.

Like Talleyrand, Jahangir Tareen is totally amoral, conscienceless, knavish, and venal. He is nothing but a charlatan and a racketeer. His latest move of forming a new party was obviously because he feared his business interests might suffer under the new dispensation in Pakistan unless he totally cuts himself off from the PTI, and salutes the new regime.
