The myth behind Krang Suri

A spectacular waterfall is just one aspect of Krang Suri. A few people are aware of the historical narratives behind this place. In Pnar dialect (a dialect spoken in the Jaintia Hills region), the word “Krang” means “krem, or a cave,” and “Suri” means “sickle-shaped weapons.” According to oral historians, Krang Suri was always the secluded natural arsenal during the 335 years of rule of the Jaintia kings from 1500 AD to 1835 AD.Here, the Jaintia rulers used to keep their deadly weapons secret. Only a few loyal tribal army commanders were aware of this secret, and every time before a battle, they used to visit Krang Suri to collect these weapons. An ancient cave is also still there, behind the waterfall. However, the tourists visiting this place as well as the local residents have little knowledge about it.

How to Get to Krang Suri Waterfall

Krang Suri Waterfall—one of India’s hidden gems—is cut off from the tourist trail. This place is roughly 30 kilometres from Jowai in the West Jaintia Hills District and 90 kilometres from Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya. There is no motorable road to this waterfall. The path leading up to Krang Suri from the parking place is extremely narrow and treacherous, as it runs along the edge of the steep mountains. En route, one may see the entire panorama of this magical waterfall as it falls and splits into countless smaller branches. The roaring sound of the waterfall gets louder as the trek draws to a close, and it makes the journey more exciting.

The Krang Suri waterfall can be visited every day of the year, so you may go whenever you choose. However, early in the morning (between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m.) is the ideal time to visit this place. The entrance fee is INR 50 per person, and if you wish to swim in the pool, you have to pay INR 100 to rent a life jacket (as per the latest information from the source).
